Kostyuk Enjoying a Superb Start
20-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk has had a brilliant start to the 2023 season. Just a month in, she is already 8-4 with two quarterfinal showings.
The first one came in Adelaide 1, where she began as a qualifier and beat the likes of Mayar Sherif, Jaimee Fourlis, and Elena Rybakina. She ultimately lost to Ons Jabeur but not putting up a fight with 6-7(5), 5-7. The next such instance was in Hua Hin last week – this time, she fell to Bianca Andreescu after beating En-Shuo Liang and Nao Hibino.
Between the two events, Marta also reached the third round in the Aus Open – beating Amanda Anisimova in the opener.
In the doubles draw, however, she was far more impressive as she reached the semifinal alongside Elena-Gabriela Ruse. They ultimately lost to the pairing of Siniakova-Krejcikova, but the valuable experience Kostyuk gained there will serve her well on tour.

Cirstea, Coming off Bleak Results
World No. 61 Sorana Cirstea is hoping for a turnaround in Abu Dhabi, but that is likely to be a difficult task.
She last competed in the Melbourne Slam, where she was beaten by Yulia Putintseva in the opener in three sets. Before that, she cleared the qualifiers in Adelaide 2 – dismissing Camila Giorgi and Kaia Kanepi en route – but lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia in round one. It was a similar story for the Romanian in Adelaide 1, where Ons Jabeur defeated her in straight sets.
Cirstea closed the 2022 season at 22-21 with zero titles, witnessing a fair amount of early losses – often at the hands of lower-ranked players. By contrast, Kostyuk was at 28-20 and made some waves on the circuit.
Kostyuk v Cirstea Prediction and Tip
Bookmakers have pegged Kostyuk as the favourite, and we are inclined to agree with them. The youngster is in a fine form and given her momentum, she should do well to reach round two – albeit with some struggle.
