Sofia Kenin v Jule Niemeier Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 US Open where Niemeier had won their opening round match in straight sets.

Kenin Falls in Australian Open Opener

This is the issue with losing one rankings despite being a quality player – you end up playing seeded players in the early rounds of tournaments.

And that is exactly what happened to Kenin in the previous competition she featured in. Entering the Australian Open with a title win under her belt two years ago, Kenin was drawn to play Victoria Azarenka in the first round.

Kenin lost this battle of the former Australian Open winners, with Azarenka going on to make the semifinals.

This isn’t to say Kenin has been completely under-par this season. A second round showing at the Auckland Open was stalled by Cori Gauff before she managed to make it to the semifinal of the Hobart International before the season’s opening Grand Slam.

And while she has lost her only previous meeting to Niemeier, we can expect a far better showing this time around.

Niemeier 1-5 This Season

It was last week that Niemeier finally won a competitive match of tennis this season. The German, who is currently 71st in the world, had entered the Lyon Open on the back of four successive defeats before she overcame Olga Danilovic in the opener there.

And then Niemeier lost again in the second round to Camila Osorio to make it five defeats from six matches. What would be a tad more upsetting for Niemeier is she hasn’t won a single set in any of the five matches she featured all season.

Niemeier will also know she has been dealt some very difficult early rounds but more importantly she is more of a clay-court player than a hard-courter. It could be a matter of biding her time, getting a few results and then prepping for the clay court swing from April.

In the meantime though, against Kenin, Niemeier will have her work cut out as her American opponent looks to break back into the top 100 of the WTA Rankings.

Kenin v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Kenin is 7/10 to win this which is what we will be backing too against a player who has struggled to get going in any way this season.
