Roger Federer v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head
The two players have met on the ATP circuit six times with Federer winning on all six occasions. The Swiss has only dropped a set in the six meetings with the most recent meeting being in Dubai in 2015, with Federer winning in two routine sets.
Federer Looking for More Routine Win
Roger Federer began his 2019 Dubai campaign with a hard fought three set win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber. Although the Swiss took the head-to-head to a dominating 14-0, Kohlschreiber did well to hang in with Federer and slow him down after a first set that looked like Federer was going to run away within an hour. Federer was playing his first match after the Australian Open loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas and thus some lack of match practice could be the reason for him not looking like his fluent self.
Being a seven time champion here at Dubai, Federer will be looking for a title run this week that can take him to his much waited 100th ATP title. With a tricky draw, and back to back matches to come later in the week, the Swiss will be hoping for a more routine performance in the second round. In the opener, the Federer serve had its moments where it came under pressure from Kohlschreiber and the backhand looked below par, and he will be hoping for a better showing in his next round.
A title win at Dubai will not only give the Swiss maestro his 100th title but also move him up from number seven to number four in the ATP rankings.
Can Verdasco Get His First Win against the Maestro?
Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco has been a force to reckon with on the ATP tour for more than a decade now. Currently ranked #32 in the world, Verdasco has been ranked as high as number seven and has upset many a top ranked player throughout his career. A three time grand slam quarter finalist and having made the 2009 Australian Open semi-finals, the 35 year old is well regarded by his peers.
Verdasco has an explosive forehand and being a left hander has troubled many of his opponents with the powerful cross-court shot. Verdasco has had some tight matches and close losses thus far in 2019, most noteworthy being his five set loss to Marin Cilic in the third round of the Australian Open, after being up by two sets.
The Spaniard had a tricky first round against Thomas Fabbiano, where he came back to win in three sets.
Federer v Verdasco Predictions & Tips
Although the head-to-head has been one sided, the match-up always makes for an exciting duel. Verdasco being a left hander with a strong forehand has the tools to trouble Federer. However, Federer has always got the better of him. The Swiss will still be looking to shake off some of the rust from the first round and Verdasco will be attempting to take an early advantage. Expect a well fought match, but a win again for the Swiss in two competitive sets.
