Gael Monfils v Marcos Baghdatis Head to Head
They have played each other on four previous occasions and the Frenchman has a 3-1 advantage. All four matches came on hard court surfaces with Baghdatis having won their first match in Cincinnati way back in 2006 before Monfils beat his opponent at the 2007 Australian Open, and then avenged the Cincinnati loss in its 2016 edition. The fourth encounter came at the 2017 US Open where Monfils won in straight sets again.
Red-Hot Monfils Starts Huge Favourite
Monfils has had his fitness concerns which made him pull out of the Auckland Open earlier and then saw the 30th seed crash out in round two of the Australian Open but since then his stocks have soared.
It began with the Sofia Open performance that saw him make it to the semi-final having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. A loss to Daniil Medvedev didn’t deter him too much as he came back strongly at the Rotterdam Open to win the title there.
It included a revenge for Monfils as he overcame Medvedev after having fallen to a set deficit. In the final he defeated Stan Wawrinka to bag his first ATP title since the Qatar Open last year.
A withdrawal from the Qatar Open followed but here he is, at the Dubai Open‘s second round having taken out the third seeded Marin Cilic in three sets. What makes that win even more special is that Monfils won the final set 6-0 against a top-notch player.
Unpredictable Baghdatis to Find it Tough?
Marcos Baghdatis made it to the second round with a tough, three-set win over Mohamed Safwat and while he did speak highly of his opponent, what he would want to do is to do something similar against a much better player in the form of Monfils.
The Cypriot had come into the tournament as a wild-card entrant, after having made the quarter-final at the Open Sud de France competition before this. There, his win over the top seeded Lucas Pouille in the round of 16, should also sound as an encouragement apart from being a warning to his opponent, who is flying high for obvious reasons.
However, Baghdatis’ other performances haven’t been the best, with a first round exit at the Australian Open having been followed by a Challenger appearance in which he failed to make the semi-finals.
Monfils v Baghdatis Predictions & Tips
Not a big surprise then that Monfils is odds on at 2/11 (Betfair) to win this one as opposed to Baghdatis starting out at 9/2 (bet365). What we think is that Monfils won’t just be a straight-set winner but also win it by dropping barely any games, so less than 20.5 games expected in this encounter with bet365 offering 1/1 for this.
