Shuai Zhang is 23rd in the world and for a world number 18 Kontaveit to take her on in the first round sounded like a potentially tricky opener.
And it went that way too, with Kontaveit needing three sets and nearly two and a half hours to get past Zhang to make it to the second round.
Kontaveit shrugged off 10 of the 13 break-points she faced in the match, while breaking her opponent three times as well to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. The Estonian player took a 3-0 lead in the first set but Zhang ran away to win six of the next seven games and clinched the set.
In the second set as well, it was Kontaveit who got the first break of serve to take a 5-2 lead but then frittered away five set-points on her way to levelling the set in a tie-breaker.
For the third set in a row, Kontaveit drew first blood to go 3-1 up and from there on, held on to her serve despite going down 0-40 while serving for the match at 5-4.

Rogers Upsets Fernandez in Opener
It was a battle between two qualifiers in which Rogers had gone as a underdog but one that she won in three sets to make the second round.
Having defeated Vera Zvonareva and Magdalena Frech in the qualifying rounds, Rogers edged out Leylah Fernandez in the main draw to make it back to back opening round wins.
With a second round appearance at the Australian Open under her belt, Rogers was on court for two hours and 22 minutes before clinching a similar place here. She won 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
In a rather cagey first two sets, there was only one break of serve that proved to be the difference between the two. It was only after Fernandez levelled the proceedings and took the encounter into the third set that the parity grew and Rogers came through with three more breaks of serves.
Can she use this form to take down an otherwise struggling Kontaveit?
