Potapova Bounces Back to Beat Bronzetti
World no. 44 Anastasia Potapova of Russia bounced back from a set down to beat Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the first round of the Linz Open on Tuesday.
Broken twice by the Italian, Potapova was outplayed in the opening set. However, she was determined not to go out easily and put up a solid fight in the second. Bronzetti broke in the first game, but the Russian responded with an immediate break. She then held serve the next game to go 2-1 up. A series of five consecutive breaks followed with Poatpova getting three of those breaks. She eventually ended the series by holding serve in the ninth game and forcing the decider.
The third set too saw both players exchanging two breaks each early. But it was a vital third break in the ninth game that proved to be decisive for Potapova, who clinched the two-hour-and-nine-minute contest 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Currently ranked no. 44 in the world, Potapova improved to 6-5 from all competitions in 2023. She couldn’t go past the qualifiers in Adelaide-1, lost in the first round in Adelaide-2, and in the second round at the Australian Open, but she made it to the last eight in Lyon last week. Seeded no. eighth in Linz, the 2022 Istanbul champion will be eyeing a second consecutive quarterfinal with a win on Wednesday.

Niemeier Rallies Past Kenin
Just like Potapova, Germany’s Jule Niemeier had also lost the opening set in her opener against Sofia Kenin. But the world no. 71 found her way back in the contest to march into the round of 16.
The 23-year-old, who made an impact last year by reaching the last eight on her Wimbledon debut and the fourth round at the U.S. Open, needed two hours and 13 minutes to beat the American and get her second win of the season.
Niemeier’s only win this season had come over Olga Danilovic in the first round of the Lyon Open last week. She had lost both her matches at the United Cup, was defeated in the first qualifying round in Adelaide and also suffered a loss in the opening round of the Australian Open.
But she finally registered a win in Lyon, only to lose in the second round to eventual finalist Camila Osorio.
On Tuesday, she got a second win of the season despite getting off to a 0-4 start in the opening set. She was outplayed by Kenin in the first set, but clawed her way back with a solitary break in the second and also got the only break of the final set to seal a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Can she build on the win in Linz?
Potapova v Niemeier Prediction and Tip
Potapova has displayed better form this season, while Niemeier has been inconsistent. The Russian also prevailed in their last contest in straight sets, so she has the edge going into the contest. That said, Niemeier is a fine player and she will make things difficult for the Russian
