Anhelina Kalinina played a pretty decent match to take down a red-hot Alycia Parks who won the Lyon Open a few days ago. Kalinina played a good match but was greatly aided by Parks who was not close to her best. The American misfired far too often and didn’t serve that well giving Kalinina plenty of chances.
She did a good job overall on her serve which can be a problem at times. The flat groundstrokes also did what they needed to do and it was just an overall decent performance.
She will need something like that against Friedsam who got the better of her the last time they played. That match was also indoors but Kalinina was off on that day. Her biggest issue is that lack of consistency due to her streaky nature of play.
One day she’s really good but o another one she can’t keep the ball in play. Still, a 7-3 record this year indicates that she’s good on most days.

Friedsam Smashes Errani
Anna-Lena Friedsam is close to a top 100 return after spending a lot of time outside of it. It’s been a slow and steady grind for the German but she’s also gotten really confident in her tennis and it’s proving to be very beneficial overall. The win over Errani was expected but probably not as quickly as it happened.
That was the 4th win of the 2023 season for her as she’s off to a really good start. Traditionally, Friedsam is a really strong player indoors and generally on hard courts. She is 3-1 this year indoors and 108-55 overall in her career. One of those wins was against Kalinina last year in Angers.
Getting it again will be tough but she can do it if she produces her best tennis. Friedsam has a combination of good attacking play and good defensive play making her a very tricky player to play against.
If she has her day where she doesn’t commit too many mistakes we’re probably in for a great match. Whether she will actually win remains to be seen because Kalinina will have something to say as well.
