John Isner v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 37 year old American, and the German, who is 13 years younger.

Isner Claims First Win of the Year

Isner is now approaching the veteran stage of his career, and limits the number of tournaments that he plays.

His first round match against Chun Hsin Tseng of Taiwan was just his third of the year, and the first two had ended in defeat, including an opening round loss to Adrian Mannarino at the Australian Open.

However, despite his age, his serve remains a formidable weapon, and he served 22 aces against Tseng, who could only manage five himself.

For all that, it was a close match, and, although Isner had five break points in the course of the first set, Tseng was able to save all of them and force the tie-break, although the American then proved too strong for him.

Serve again dominated the second set, to the extent that there was only one break created in the course of it. That meant a second tie-break which Isner commanded to claim the win.

Altmaier Ends His Long Losing Streak

The German needed to go back to November last year for his last win of any kind, and that was on the Challenger tour on the clay of Uruguay.

In terms of the main tour, his last victory was even further back, last June, on the grass of Mallorca.

Since then, he had entered the main draw of seven ATP tournaments and lost in the first round each time, including at the Australian Open, where he was beaten by Frances Tiafoe in four sets.

He will have been thankful, therefore, that he was given a favourable draw in the first round in Dallas, against the American qualifier Zachary Svajda, the world number 265.

Altmaier began well, and broke the American in the opening game of the match. Another break put him in total control of the first set. Svajda did have break point opportunities, but could not convert them.

In a second set where serve largely prevailed, one break proved enough for the German and, at long last, he could savour the taste of a victory.

Isner v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Whilst Altmaier will be relieved to have finally ended his long streak without a win, Isner is playing in conditions that suit his game, and, with his serve, should be too strong for the German.
