Sebastian Baez v Tomas Barrios Vera Head to Head

While these two haven’t faced off at the highest level, there have been three meetings between them on the Challenger circuit all of which came on clay in 2021. And all were won by Baez.

Baez Finally Wins a Match

Following three successive defeats and an opening round bye here to kick things off for the season, Baez would be heaving a sigh of relief here after winning his first match of the year.

Baez took out Italian qualifier Luciano Darderi in two easy sets to set up a meeting with Chilean wild-card entrant Barrios Vera in the last eight.

In a match lasting an hour and 26 minutes, Baez was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Darderi with the Argentine saving all three breaks of serves that he faced. In return, he broke Darderi three times – twice in the first set and once in the second.

The Argentine has always performed exceptionally on clay but the Estoril Open winner from the previous season will need a couple of deep runs to start moving back to his career-best ranking of 31st.

Baez has a good chance to do that here with his next match coming up against a world number 212.

Barrios Vera Doubles His Career Win Count

Before coming into this tournament, Barrios Vera had won two career matches at the highest level including one in the Davis Cup. In a matter of two days, he has doubled that tally by reaching the quarterfinal of the Cordoba Open.

After having gotten past Daniel Elahi Galan in the first round, Barrios Vera overcame odds and the loss of the first set to Bernabe Zapata Miralles to make the last eight stage.

Barrios Vera won 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 42 minutes, warding off six of the eight break-points he faced and breaking his opponent four times.

The first set went on serve till the 12th game when Barrios Vera stumbled and was broken but he came back strongly by taking a 2-0 lead in the second set. He maintained that advantage till he had levelled things off and taken the match into a decider.

Two breaks of serves helped Barrios Vera go 4-0 up in the final set and while Zapata Miralles broke back once, the Chilean retaliated back with a third break of serve that helped him clinch the match.

Can he now overcome a higher pedigreed opponent here?

Baez v Barrios Vera Prediction and Tip

Baez is 2/5 to win this and in all likelihood he shouldn’t face too many issues here getting past his wildcard opponent in straight sets.
