Daria Kasatkina v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Kasatkina and Zheng have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Kasatkina Registers Comeback Win over Teichmann

After having gotten pulverised in a shocking first round defeat at the Australian Open, Kasatkina did not look like she was doing any better in her opener here against Jil Teichmann.

It was only after the world number eight lost the first set 6-1 – that was the fifth successive set she had won two or lesser games in – that Kasatkina finally started to piece things together.

Kasatkina won 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 in a match that lasted an hour and 44 minutes to move into the quarterfinals. She had earlier got a first round bye.

After getting broken twice in the first set and retaliating with three breaks of serves in the second, Kasatkina proceeded to break and get broken twice apiece in the third set. From there on, however, it turned out to be one-way traffic in her favour as she finally won for the first time since January 13 this season.

Can Kasatkina now usurp her doughty Chinese opponent in the quarters?

Zheng Shocks Ostapenko

Qinwen did start off as a minor bookmakers’ favourite in her second round match but her opponent Jelena Ostapenko had been in good form. For Qinwen to then come through in straight sets – albeit in nearly two hours – would have been a huge confidence-booster.

The world number 29 saved three set-points including two in the first set tie-breaker and frittered away three of her own before winning 7-6 (10), 6-1 in an hour and 59 minutes to make it to the quarterfinal.

Having defeated Rebecca Marino in the first round, Zheng was gunning to register her first set of back to back wins for the season. Before this she had been baulked at the second round stage at each of Adelaide International, Adelaide International 2 and Australian Open.

Up against Kasatkina, Zheng could fancy her chances as she looks to march towards her career-best ranking of 25th.

She will hope to take advantage of Kasatkina’s recent travails.

Kasatkina v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina is bit of a favourite but we expect Zheng to scoop this up in three fighting sets.
