Taylor Fritz v Marcos Giron Head to Head

At the highest level, they have faced each other twice and it’s 1-1. This includes a meeting at this very tournament last year when Giron had needed a third set tie-breaker to get past Fritz.

Fritz Tames Sock in Straight Sets

Jack Sock’s come back to the tour with renewed hope and it did look like he could test fellow American and a top-10 player Taylor Fritz in their second round encounter.

And for some fleeting moments one thought he had a chance too when he pushed the opening set into a tie-breaker and took a 4-3 lead in it.

Unfortunately for him, Fritz’s pedigree stood out as he came back to win the tie-breaker and then completed a 7-6 (5), 6-4 in an hour and 37 minutes. This was Fritz’s first match since his shock second round exit at the Australian Open where he had lost to Alexei Popyrin in five sets.

Fritz had earlier helped USA lift the United Cup with a 4-1 singles win-loss record and had a first round bye here.

A quarterfinalist in this tournament last year, Fritz will now look to go one better with a win against Giron.

Giron Eases Past Otte

Oscar Otte hasn’t quite been in the kind of form recently as he was at his best over the past couple of years but having upset Christopher Eubanks in the opening round, he might have given himself a chance against Giron.

Giron had other ideas though. He needed only an hour and eight minutes to ease through to a second round win, following up his opening victory over Alex Rybakov.

The American held off three break-point opportunities against him while drilling past his opponent’s serve on three occasions to win it 6-4, 6-3.

Interestingly, this is the second time this season that the 55th-ranked Giron has won back to back matches. Having done that in Auckland against Federico Coria and JJ Wolf, he had fallen to Cameron Norrie – another top 15 player.

Can Giron get himself a win against the world number eight this time to win three on the bounce?

Fritz v Giron Prediction and Tip

While Giron was clinical in his destruction of the heavy-serving Otte, Fritz has a more complete game and we can expect the world number eight to get through to the quarterfinal.
