Francisco Cerundolo v Federico Coria Head to Head

Spread across the Futures, Challengers and ATP tours, there have been seven meetings between these two players and Coria leads 5-2. All of them have come on clay including three on the ATP circuit where Coria leads 2-1.

They had once faced off at the Cordoba Open in 2021 as well, where Coria had won in three.

Cerundolo Edges Past Delbonis

Following a poor start to the year at the United Cup where Cerundolo lost both his singles matches, he looks to have come back well. The Argentine made it to the third round at the Australian Open and then clinched his Davis Cup singles match against Finland’s Otto Virtanen.

And while Federico Delbonis was always expected to put up a fight in the first round here because of his clay-court credentials, Cerundolo found a way to get past him too.

Cerundolo won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a match lasting two hours and 32 minutes, having earlier gotten himself a first round bye in the tournament.

There were a total of 11 breaks of serves in the match and at 5-3 in the final set, it looked like Delbonis was on his way to clinching the match as he served for it. Cerundolo broke twice, wasted five match-points before finally carving the win out.

Can he now get past a fellow countryman who has now almost exclusively started playing on clay?

Coria Gets Past Cecchinato

As mentioned in the section above, Coria rarely plays on surfaces other than clay and even when he does, he rarely wins.

This season’s record is another indicator towards that. Coria, who featured in three tournaments on hard courts, did not win a single main draw encounter. At the United Cup, he lost both, then only made the Auckland Open as a lucky loser before falling in the opener at the Australian Open.

As soon as Coria switched over to clay, he found success.

At the Concepcion Challenger, he dropped just one set on his way to the title and has followed that up with a couple of key wins here. Coria started off with a win over Thiago Monteiro in three sets, before easing through to a victory over the injured Marco Cecchinato in the second round.

Cecchinato retired from the encounter in the second set.

Can Coria now surprise Cerundolo here?

Cerundolo v Coria Prediction and Tip

While Cerundolo is the higher-ranked player, Coria has a good chance of upsetting him. Three sets in all probability.
