Qinwen Zheng v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head

There have been two meetings between these two players and both have won once. The first came at the Palermo Open in 2021 where Zheng had triumphed before Samsonova got one back in their second match in the final of the WTA Tokyo last year.

Zheng Sends Kasatkina Packing

Zheng has been on a giant-killing spree in this tournament, having packed away Jelena Ostapenko and Daria Kasatkina in straight sets to make the semifinal.

While Ostapenko still managed to push Zheng in one of those sets, Zheng routed Kasatkina 6-1, 6-2 in a surprise quarterfinal result. The match lasted a mere hour and 19 minutes.

Facing just four break-points in the match, Zheng saved them all thanks to her first serves. She won 81% of the first serve points.

In turn, Zheng broke Kasatkina four times after getting 10 opportunities to do so.

The world number 29 will now have a third successive challenging encounter but given his form, Zheng will carry the confidence into this.

Samsonova Turning Things Around This Tournament

Before this competition, Samsonova had a struggling start to the season. She had lost to Aryna Sabalenka in Adelaide 1, then fell to Amanda Anisimova in Adelaide 2 while getting routed by Donna Vekic at the Australian Open. In all she had won just two matches in those three tournaments.

Which is why Samsonova wasn’t quite the favourite in both her previous rounds – against Barbora Krejcikova and Veronika Kudermetova.

And on both occasions, Samsonova came away a straight-set winner, showing why she is one of the top 20 players in the world at the moment and had won three titles last year.

Samsonova routed fellow countrywoman Kudermetova 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinal to seal her place in the semifinal, needing an hour and 25 minutes to do so.
