Belinda Bencic v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Samsonova has won every single time.

You would have expected a better fight in a match between the world number nine and 14 but in this case, in this semifinal, Bencic lived up to her favourites billing like a dream.
The Swiss number one had very little difficulty in her semifinal against Beatriz Haddad Maia, defeating the Brazilian 6-2, 6-3 to make it to the title-decider. The match lasted an hour and 33 minutes.
Bencic, who had been sent packing from this tournament’s opening round on the last two occasions she had featured in it, broke her opponent four times in this encounter. In turn, she faced just one break-point and saved it without any hesitation.
Earlier in this tournament, Bencic had crushed Marta Kostyuk and Shelby Rogers in straight sets, having also won the Adelaide International 2 title. She now has 11 wins in 2023 to two defeats – coming at the hands of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
Against lesser mortals, Bencic has been unstoppable and it looks like another title coming her way.

Samsonova Takes Down Qinwen
Samsonova’s road to the final has been fraught with some very challenging opponents and a couple of difficult encounters. She has proved to be insurmountable in the face of this and will play in her fifth WTA final.
What’s impressive to note is that Samsonova has won every single of her previous four singles finals, which includes a win over Bencic in the final of the German Open 2021.
Her path to the title-decider saw Samsonova get the better of Barbora Krejcikova in the second round and Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinal. And in her latest match, Samsonova edged past Qinwen 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes to make the final.
Both players got a couple of breaks of serves with the difference between Samsonova’s clinical play that saw her get those breaks at the most opportune times.
In the first set, she broke Qinwen in the third game and then held on to her serve. The final set saw her break just as Qinwen served to stay in the match at 4-5, allowing Samsonova to get through.
