John Isner v Wu Yibing Head to Head

Isner and Yibing are facing off for the first time in their careers.

Isner Stuns Wolf in Crunch Match

There were 31 aces and Isner won 81% of his first serve points but it still took him a third set tie-breaker to scrape past JJ Wolf and make it to the final of this tournament.

Isner was on court for a shade over two hours and 31 minutes in his 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over the fellow American. In doing so, Isner made it to his first ATP Tour final April 2022.

Having registered straight-set wins over Chun-hsin Tseng, Daniel Altmaier and Emilio Gomez in the first three rounds, Isner always knew he had his work cut out when he took on the highly-talented and in-form Wolf.

And when he lost the first set after being broken off the third break-point he faced, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Except Isner still had his serve to bail him out and that’s exactly what he did over the next two sets.

He saved five break-points in the second set and did not face a single one of them in the decider, while turning on the screws on the Wolf serve at various points in the encounter to come through.

Can he win his first title on the ATP circuit since his July 2021 victory at the Atlanta Open?

Yibing Creates Huge Record with Fritz Win

Wu Yibing has never been to an ATP tournament final before this. In fact, no Chinese men’s player has made it to a title-decider.

The world number 97 had also never beaten a top-10 player on the circuit coming into his semifinal against the world number eight Taylor Fritz.

All these records fell by the wayside when he edged past Fritz 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 34 minutes. Facing 20 aces and a whopping first serve win percentage of 81% from Fritz, Yibing managed to hang on to his serve with great aplomb as he came back from a set down to upset the American apple-cart.

Yibing saved all nine break-points that he faced including three in the first set of the encounter. Fritz’s experience shone through in the opening set though as he took it in a tie-breaker.

Most 97th-ranked players would have capitulated against the might of a top-10 player after that but Yibing held on to his serve by the skin of his teeth in the second set. And when the opportunity presented itself in the 12th game in the form of his first break-point of the set, Yibing grabbed it with both hands to level the proceedings.

In the decider, Fritz was broken once and against the run of play. This can be shown from the fact Fritz lost just one point on his serve on the other four occasions he served. Yibing, however, proved to be a hard nut to crack again as he staved off a break-point en route serving to love in the 10th game and creating a record.

Can go one better now?

Isner v Yibing Prediction and Tip

Isner will be our pick here despite Yibing’s hard hitting groundstrokes but we do expect this to go down the path of a gruelling encounter.
