Baez Continues His Run on Clay

He was 0-3 on win-loss coming into this tournament and now has won three matches in a row to level things out. That’s an indicator of Baez’s strength on clay unlike his obvious struggles outside of it.

Which is also why it’s no surprise the Argentine did not face too many issues in getting past Hugo Dellien in the semifinal of the Cordoba Open. Baez was on court for an hour and a half in dismantling his opponent 6-4, 6-4 despite losing his serve on two occasions in the encounter.

It started with the two players trading breaks in the first four games of the opening set only for Baez to break again in the seventh game. He saved three break-points in the very next game before clinching the set by serving it out to 15.

In the second, Baez went 4-2 ahead, dropped his serve to love in the eighth game before breaking right back in the very next game. There was no looking back from there as he served it out rather easily.

This win has taken Baez into the top 40 of the ATP Rankings and a title victory here could help him climb up a couple more spots as he bids to get close to his career-high ranking of 31st in the world.

Coria Stuns Ramos-Vinolas

Coria has never been a top-50 player in his career but over the years he has shown slow, but steady improvement in his performances and in turn his ranking. In 2019, he was ranked 288th in the world but ended the season at 120th.

He broke into the top 100 the very next year while ending the 2021 season at 63rd. Hitting a peak ranking of 52nd in the 2022, Coria lost some of his steam to end the year ranked 75th but here he is again, rebuilding on his performances and a win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the semifinal means he could well debut as a top-50 player this Monday.

And it was a straight-set drubbing of the highly-fancied Ramos-Vinolas that got him there too.

Coria needed two hours and 26 minutes alright to get past his determined Spanish opponent and in part it was thanks to his ability to find a way to get himself break-points. The Argentine helped himself to 20 of them on Ramos-Vinolas’ serve while converting four.

In the second set, Ramos-Vinolas had two set-points on his own serve at 6-5 which Coria saved and then scooped up the match in the following tie-breaker.

It’s this fighting spirit that makes him a player to beat on clay.

Baez v Coria Prediction and Tip

Baez is 8/15 to win this and while we reckon he will pocket this one, those odds don’t do justice to Coria’s performances. Expecting a fighting performance from Coria here.
