Dominic Thiem v Alex Molcan Head to Head

Thiem and Molcan have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Thiem Yet to Win a Match This Season

While Thiem has won a Grand Slam title at the US Open, he first made his name as one of the top players on clay having also made the final of the French Open in 2018 and 2019. And he returns to his former favourite surface as he hunts for his first win of the season.

Thiem has featured in three tournaments this season in 2023, including the Davis Cup, played four matches and lost all of them.

What makes it worse is the manner of those defeats. Thiem is yet to win a set all season, losing in the qualifiers of the Adelaide International to Soon-woo Kwon and then falling to Andrev Rublev at the Australian Open in that fashion.

One would have expected for a better result at the Davis Cup where Austria played Croatia but Thiem went down in straight sets in both those matches. Despite going in as a 1/2 favourite against Borna Gojo in one of those, he fell to a 6-3, 7-6 (2) loss.

Can he turn things around against a player who has himself not had the best of starts to 2023?

Molcan in a Strife Too

Unlike Thiem, Molcan has at least won a match this year but that’s about it. The Slovakian failed to get going at the Pune Open in the first week of the season, and then flew all the way to Auckland only to lose his opener there as well.

Molcan’s only victory came at the Australian Open where he edged out Stan Wawrinka in a fighting five-setter, coming back from two sets to one down before Felix Auger-Aliassime put an end to his campaign.

And more recently, Molcan also failed to get past Tim van Rijthoven in the Davis Cup.

This could be a golden opportunity for Molcan who is also quite fond of clay court surfaces. Five of his seven titles at the lower level have come on clay and at the highest level, he holds an overall win-loss record of 21-8 on this surface.

Can he make it even more difficult for the former French Open runner-up?

Thiem v Molcan Prediction and Tip

We think Molcan has a solid chance of upsetting the Thiem apple-cart as he looks to add to his clay court wins. Expect a fighting match though which goes to a third set.
