Francisco Cerundolo v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

They had faced off in this very tournament last season in the qualifying rounds and Cerundolo had won in straight sets.

Cerundolo Returns From Injury

A hamstring injury during his quarterfinal encounter at the Cordoba Open meant Cerundolo had to concede that match to Federico Coria. He was trailing by a set and was a break down in the second but the good news for the Argentine is the injury hasn’t proven to be too serious.

Earlier this season, the clay-court specialist Cerundolo won and lost one apiece at the United Cup before winning his first ever main draw match at a major.

He did so at the Australian Open where the clay-court specialist reached the third round with victories over Guido Pella and Corentin Moutet in that tournament.

Cerundolo had hit a career-high ranking of 24th in the world last season but ended the year at 30th. He might have bowed out early in Cordoba but has managed to maintain his 30th rank coming into this one.

Can he maintain his match fitness following the hamstring trouble to go deep in this tournament after having reached the quarterfinal here last season?

Hanfmann Hoping to Take Down Both Cerundolo Brothers

As a qualifier Hanfmann has already won a couple of rounds to get to the main draw. This includes a second round victory over Hugo Gaston that helped him make the main draw, dropping a mere one game in clinching that.

More vitally, Hanfmann managed to get past Juan Manuel Cerundolo – Francisco’s brother – in the first qualifier despite going into the encounter as a 1/1 underdog.

Other than that, however, it’s not been a mediocre season for Hanfmann who is yet to win a round in the main draw.

What the German has done well, however, is to qualify for the Australian Open and reach the quarterfinal at the Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Challenger competition.

Can he translate those results into a win over Cerundolo?

Cerundolo v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

A straight-set win looks like the most likely result for Cerundolo but for his fitness concerns. Hanfmann, with some tennis under his belt, could prove to be a hard nut to crack though.
