Alcaraz Returns to the Arena

After the kind of tennis that Alcaraz played last season, he has added truckload of fans and they would all be awaiting his return to tennis. He had a first round bye here.

Alcaraz, who took over the pole position on the ATP Rankings following his US Open triumph last season, did play in four tournaments after the season’s final Grand Slam and then featured in a pre-season exhibition competition in Abu Dhabi.

And as soon as that happened, the Spaniard announced he was withdrawing from the Australian Open Swing, including the opening major of the year because of a right leg injury.

As a result of that and because of Novak Djokovic’s stupendous performance at the Australian Open, Alcaraz has lost his number one ranking to the Serb.

This return could also be an interesting one in terms of the tentativeness – we have seen how Alexander Zverev has struggled after his return from his injury – but the good news is he did not need any invasive treatment for it.

Alcaraz starts off against the world number 57, who is coming off a solid showing in the first round.

Djere Sends Fognini Packing

It took Djere a shade over an hour and a half but in the end he managed to send out a former Masters 1000 winner and clay court specialist Fabio Fognini in the fist round.

Djere won 6-4, 6-4 thanks to his slightly better performance across multiple factors including first serve and second serve points won. Fognini’s five double-faults did not help him either as Djere broke him in the ninth game of the first set and then went 5-2 up in the second to get to the cusp of a win.

Fognini broke back in the eighth game and then won the ninth on serve before Djere served out to love to clinch the match.

The Serb has shown decent form all season and comes off a reasonably solid season on clay in 2022. Against Alcaraz, however, his only hope would be his opponent’s possible rustiness.

Alcaraz v Djere Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz will be playing in his first match at the highest level in three months and that could be a factor here. That being said, Alcaraz should still come through with a win, only that Djere could put up a fight.
