Dominic Thiem v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of Gstaad and Thiem had won that in straight sets.

Thiem Finally Wins One

It’s been a rather forgettable start to the season for Thiem.

The former world number three and Grand Slam winner had featured in three tournaments before this competition and not won a match, losing in the qualifiers at the Adelaide International, first round of the Australian Open and both his singles matches at the Davis Cup.

A switch to clay court competitions seems to have helped Thiem though as the Austrian registered a straight-set win over Alex Molcan in the first round of the Buenos Aires Open.

Thiem won 7-6 (4), 6-3 in his opener, needing an hour and 47 minutes to do so. He lost his serve just once – as he served to grab the first set at 6-5 – while breaking his opponent twice including once at 4-3 in the second set before serving it out in the very next game.

Interestingly it turned out to be a close encounter despite the straight-set win with both players getting 67% of their first serves in, winning 61% of their second serve points and the only difference being Thiem winning 71% to his opponent’s 69% of the first serve points.

Can Thiem make it two in two now?

Varillas Brings Down Sousa

Having kick-started his season at the Australian Open, Varillas had fallen in the first round there as a qualifier, losing to Alexander Zverev in five sets.

An early defeat at the Concepcion Challenger and a first round loss at the Cordoba Open followed but Varillas still began his opener here as a favourite against Joao Sousa. And he played like one too, winning 6-2, 7-5 to reach the round of 16.

In a match lasting an hour and 43 minutes, Varillas defeated Sousa after dismantling his opponent’s serve on five occasions from the 11 chances he got. At the same time, he was broken twice – once in each set – but never fell behind in the match.

Varillas now faces another player who hadn’t done too well before the start of this competition and who is coming into this match off his first win of the season.

Can he take down the former French Open runner-up?

Thiem v Varillas Prediction and Tip

While Thiem is a 1/2 favourite to win this, we can back Varillas to grab at least a set given how closely matched these two are. Might see a three-setter here.
