Stan Wawrinka v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

The two players have met as many as five times on the ATP Tour and right now, Wawrinka leads the Aussie with a slim lead of 3-2. Interestingly, both the players have received a win on two separate occasions; courtesy of their opponent retiring from the match.

It was the Swiss who got the last laugh back in 2018 Rogers Cup. It was a three-set affair where Wawrinka ultimately prevailed.

Kyrgios’ Best Performance of the Season

It is a well-known fact that the young Australian is always clouded by some or the other controversy. However, there are instances when he is able to back his antics with his phenomenal tennis, especially against big players. This week in Acapulco, he has done just that.

World No. 72 defeated the top seed Rafael Nadal in a three-set thriller that lasted for a little over three hours. The match had all the makings to be a nail-biting affair and Kyrgios managed to deliver handsomely on that.

After losing the first set, he won the other sets in crucial tie-breakers to seal the victory. In fact, in the final set, he saved five break points while in the tie-breaker, he saved three match points to prevent Nadal from moving to the next round.

It was some remarkable tennis by the Aussie – a feat last seen sometime in 2018. So far this year, he had failed to impress losing miserably in the early rounds in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Delray Beach.

Wawrinka Looking Sharp as Usual

The last couple of weeks have been truly great for Wawrinka. He was the runner-up in the Rotterdam Open, missing out on his first singles title of the season by a narrow margin. Nonetheless, he did get some decent victories over the likes of Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori – a good confidence booster.

By the looks of it, he has certainly turned his disappointing start to the season around and now, he will be hoping to go the distance in Acapulco. If he manages to get past Kyrgios, his path to the final becomes pretty much doable.

However, Wawrinka is still on course to re-build his form following his tryst with injuries in the first half of the previous season. He ended 2018 with a win-loss count of 17-17, with his highlight being a semifinal appearance in the ATP St. Petersburg.

Till now, he has defeated two American players back to back in straight sets – Ryan Harrison and Steve Johnson. His real test, however, will be now when he faces the challenging Kyrgios.

Stan Wawrinka v Nick Kyrgios Predictions & Tips

Both the players are evenly matched for this fixture although, bookmakers will favour Wawrinka owing to his recent form. However, Kyrgios just knocked out one of the most formidable players on the circuit. Against a form like that, even experience may fall short.

Tip: Wawrinka expected to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365) .
