Niemeier Off to a Slow Start

Jule Niemeier is off to a slow start in 2023. The German, who produced two big Grand Slam performances last year, and also broke into the top 100 in 2022, is 2-6 across levels this year.

Ranked no. 69th in the world, the 23-year-old, had lost four in a row to start the season. She would be relieved to have at least one a match each in her last two tournaments in Lyon and Linz, but will hope for more consistency in her game that can see her go deep in WTA tournaments on a regular basis.

Her two victories this season came against Olga Danilovic in Lyon and Sofia Kenin in Linz. While Ossorio Serrano ended her run in Lyon, Anastasia Potapova knocked her out in Linz.

She has looked a much improved player over the last two tournaments, particularly after losing the first four in straight sets. Marie Bouzkova and Madison Keys beat her in the United Cup; Karolina Pliskova knocked her out in the qualifying round in Adeliade-2, while world no. 1 Iga Swiatek eased past her at the Australian Open.

Niemeier will be hoping to regain the form that saw her succeed last year. She was a quarterfinalist in Wimbledon, made it to the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open and also won her maiden WTA 125 title last year on clay in Makarska, Croatia.

Overall, she had a 41-23 season in 2022, and while clay and grass remain her most productive surfaces, that run in the U.S. Open would have given her a lot of confidence to deliver on hard courts. She is 0-4 on hard this year. Will things change in Merida?

Udvardy Struggling for Form

Facing the German will be world no. 93 Panna Udvardy, who too has got off to a poor start. While she hasn’t played much at the tour level, she has struggled to produce results at the ITF and qualifier levels as well.

Udvardy won her first qualifying round in Hobart but fell in the second. She was then knocked out by Osorio Serrano in the opening round of the Australian Open and then won just one match in two ITF events following her appearance in the first major.

So overall the Hungarian is 2-4, across levels. That’s not the start she would have envisioned after finishing 2022 with two titles from three finals between October and November.

Udvardy, who is at her best on clay courts, finished with a 42-35 record last year. She won her first WTA 125 title in Buenos Aires in November on clay, but her other two finals late last year came at the ITF level on hard courts. She lost one of those but won her first-ever ITF title on hard court at the Barranquilla Open.

Udvardy had also featured in two other finals in teh earlier half of the season, winning one and losing on on clay.

Can she overcome the tough start and find form in Merida?

Niemeier v Udvardy Prediction and Tip

Both have struggled in the earlier part of the season, but it’s Niemeier who has looked the better of the two. She has played against the top players and has looked extremely competitive in the last four matches. Expect her to beat Udvardy in the opener.
