Lin Zhu has been absolutely remarkable this year as she made a superb run at the Australian Open and then not long ago captured her maiden WTA title. It’s been a dream run for the Chinese player but now it’s time to prove whether it was for real.
She’s in Merida where she’ll take on a player who defeated her twice so far in her career and that’s going to be a proper challenge. Both of those losses came a couple of years ago and she’s a far better player now but it’s uncommon for players who had a sudden rise, to also have a sudden crash.
Zhu should enjoy the conditions in Mexico because they play into her strengths. She’s very competitive, it’s hard to win points against her and she played well in Guadalajara last year.
She will need to be careful because her opponent is one that can take over matches. If she finds her Melbourne and Hua Hin form, it shouldn’t be an issue. She’s 10-3 so far this year.

McNally Returns to Tennis
Caty McNally barely played this year and I think that will be her main problem here. She’s a terrific player who can play really well and hit the ball hard. Hard courts are her best surface along with grass but tennis is such a rhythm-based sport.
Even the best players in the world struggle when they have been out of the game for a while and she’s only played three matches so far and lost two of them. Even when she played she didn’t look too good and it’s going to be really hard for her.
In a way, her opponent is the worst possible one because makes you work for every point and in every rally. There is a chance that plays into her hand if the match becomes long and McNally finds a good rhythm later but I don’t see it happening.
Her stamina will also be tested in this one and she will need to produce an incredible effort to win. It’s possible but just not likely.
Zhu v McNally Prediction and Tip
Everything in this matchup points to Zhu getting this done. She’s played far more this year, she is far better player than McNally. She’s 0-2 against her but that was four years ago and she’s a much better player now. Take Zhu.
