Sloane Stephens v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

It is 1-0 to Gracheva; they last met in the 2021 Melbourne 250 where the Russian won 6-2, 6-2.

Stephens Beats Jeanjean

Sloane Stephens began her campaign in Merida with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Leolia Jeanjean. The match went on for a little over one hour and saw the American serve four aces and win 81% of the first-service points.

With that, the current World No. 41 has opened her tally for the 2023 season. She arrived in Mexico on the heels of a lacklustre start, losing three opening-round fixtures in the Australian Open swing.

The match against Jeanjean would have come as a huge relief for the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who was yet to win a set this season.

Stephens has struggled a fair bit with her form since reaching the top 10 in 2018. Last year, she won her first singles trophy in over four years; even then, her tally was 18-17 – thanks to her title run and quarterfinal runs in the French Open and Guadalajara Open.

Interestingly, the tile came right here in Mexico in Zapopan. Perhaps, she will find her groove again in the country – but this time on the east coast.

Gracheva Beats Maria

Varvara Gracheva battled Tatjana Maria for two hours to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The 22-year-old started as a qualifier in the tournament but lost to Kimberly Birrell. However, the lucky loser rule earned her a ticket to the main draw.

Objectively, Gracheva has had a far better season than Stephens. She is 7-7 so far, with her highlight being the third-round showing in the Australian Open where she upset Daria Kasatkina – current World No. 8 – 6-1, 6-1.

Most recently, Varvara played in Linz where she lost in the qualifiers, but the LL rule sent her to the main event. After beating Anna Blinkova in the opener, she fell to Maria Sakkari in straight sets.

Stephens v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

The 89th-ranked Gracheva is not the worst bet to make, considering that bookmakers consider her an underdog. Stephens, for all her brilliant pedigree and skills, is struggling a lot and that should make things a little less difficult for the Russian to carve the upset. In any case, we are in for an entertaining match.
