Giorgi Takes Down Fourth Seed Siniakova

Camila Giorgi reached her 10th WTA final with a straight sets win over fourth seed Katerina Siniakova on Saturday.

The Italian, who has not dropped a set this week, came back from a break down to take the first set.

In the second, she got an early break but then lost four straight games near the end of the set to trail 5-6. But Siniakova could not serve out the set as Giorgi broke once agin to force the tiebreak. She dominated the tiebreak to beat the world no. 47 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

Siniakova was the third seeded player that Giorgi beat this week. She had begun her campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over sixth seed Mayar Sherif in the opener. She then knocked out Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the round of 16, before scoring an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 win over second seed Sloane Stephens.

Giorgi will be playing in her first final since winning the Canadian Open title in 2021. She also has two other WTA titles to her name.

The Italian, who also reached the third round of the Australian Open, is 7-4 so far in 2023. Can she improve her record further by winning her fourth career title on Sunday?

Determined Peterson Edges Out McNally

Rebecca Peterson has been in outstanding form this month and the Swede continued her excellent run in Merida, going from qualifiers to the final.

The world no. 140, who was a finalist at the ITF Orlando earlier this month, defeated Caty McNally in the semifinal on Saturday to reach her third tour-level final.

Peterson has a perfect 2-0 record form her previous finals, winning the titles in Jianxi and Tianjin respectively.

The 27-year-old, playing her first WTA tournament in 2023, has looked outstanding so far. She got into the main draw with wins over Diane Parry and Carol Zhao respectively.

She then knocked out Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 7-5 in the first round and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over fifth seed and Lyon champion Alycia Parks. She got even better in the quarterfinal, knocking out the top seed and Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Against the world no. 92 McNally, Peterson got off to a flying start, breaking her twice in a dominant first set. McNally turned the tables in the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead. But the Swede rebounded. Both exchanged three breaks each in the set before the American sealed it in the tiebreak.

The final set too saw McNally build a 0-4 lead. But once again, a determined Peterson fought back and in an incredible turnaround she won six games in a row to win the two hour and 49 minute contest 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

Can she keep her stunning run going in the final?

Giorgi v Peterson Prediction and Tip
