Thanasi Kokkinakis v Quentin Halys Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between these two players at the highest level. They have played twice, however, on the Challenger circuit and it was won by Halys both times.

Kokkinakis Coming off a Challenger Title

He might be ranked 100th in the world but Kokkinakis cannot have too many complaints about the kind of season he has had so far.

The Aussie started off with a second round appearance at the Adelaide International 1 but it was at the Adelaide International 2 that he showed what he is capable of. With a win over Andrey Rublev and Miomir Kecmanovic in that tournament he made it all the way through to the semifinal there.

At the Australian Open Kokkinakis entered the second round but more vitally he went on to clinch his first title of the season – it might have come on the Challenger circuit but it should give him some confidence coming into this competition and the rest of the season.

For the second time in the season, Kokkinakis overcame Alexei Popyrin on his way to winning that tournament in Manama.

Can he now kick-start his Indian Wells Open tune-up with a solid showing?

Halys Makes it as a Lucky Loser

Every now and then this season, Halys has shown the kind of spark you would associate with a player who is capable of breaking into the top-50. Where he has been found lacking is his consistency.

Halys had started the season off with second round and quarterfinal appearances at the Adelaide International and Auckland Open. And there has been another quarterfinal appearance at the Montpellier Open where he had gotten the better of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

At other times, in Melbourne, Rotterdam and Doha, Halys was knocked out in the first round.

More vitally here in Dubai, Halys fell to Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the qualifiers but has made it through as a qualifier. The question now is if he can make it past another Aussie?

Kokkinakis v Halys Prediction and Tip

Kokkinakis might be ranked lower than Halys but on paper we have to give the Aussie the edge. Expect a three-setter or at least two very tight sets though.
