Alexei Popyrin v Pavel Kotov Head to Head
No previous matches have been played between these two players at the highest level. They did meet on the Challenger circuit once and Popyrin had won that encounter in 2018.

Popyrin Hoping to Build on the Australian Open Showing
While Popyrin was sent out in straight sets at the Adelaide International 2, that performance was sandwiched by two really strong ones by the Aussie.
At the first, Popyrin came through the qualifiers to shock Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marcos Giron to make the quarterfinals at the Adelaide International 1.
This was followed by Popyrin added to his list of shock scalps when he got the better of Taylor Fritz in the second round of the Australian Open. Fritz, a top-five player at the moment, fought till the very end but was shell-shocked by a stunning Popyrin performance.
More recently, Popyrin opted to take part in the Manama Challenger where he lost to fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis in the quarterfinals. Still, he would have gotten himself some confidence by winning those first couple of rounds.
Facing a qualifier here, Popyrin should be in good enough rhythm to get past his Russian opponent.

Kotov Waiting on His First Main Draw Win for 2023
That Kotov has made it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw would make him rather pleased given how things have gone for him all season. And all career in fact.
Because Kotov has won just two main draw matches at the highest level and has a career-best ranking of 96th in the world. Currently ranked 135th, he was a 21/10 underdog coming into his qualifier against Roman Safiullin but came back from a set down to upset his fellow countryman.
Kotov then overcame Alexander Shevchenko in the second qualifier to enter round one for the second time this season.
His only previous time of entering the main draw this year came at the Australian Open where he was a lucky loser. He didn’t last too long after that, falling to the in-form Tallon Griekspoor in the opener.
A win over Popyrin, although improbable, would be something he can dream of – he has shown to be one who rarely gives up without a fight and against Popyrin that might help.
