Hurkacz Escapes Early Elimination
World no. 11 Hubert Hurkacz survived an opening round scare as he battled past world no. 119 Alexander Shevchenko in an engrossing three-setter.
The victory extended the Pole’s win streak to five matches. He had won four in a row last week to claim the Marseille Open title.
Following last week’s success which earned him his sixth career title, Hurkacz would have hoped for an easy outing in his Dubai opener. But it turned out to be anything but easy.
Hurkacz found himself under pressure after the Russian got the solitary break of the first set to draw first blood. He however bounced back in the second after getting a break late in the set.
The third set turned out to be a real close affair. Hurkacz had built a 5-3 lead but he could not close out the match with a determined Shevchenko refusing to surrender. The lucky loser got a break late in the set to force the tiebreak and then matched the fifth seed over the first 14 points. But in the end it was Hurkacz who edged the tiebreak and took the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Thanks to the victory, Hurkacz is now 11-4 this season. Can he improve that record further on Wednesday?

Kotov Battles Past Popyrin
Pavel Kotov won his first main draw match of the season as he ousted Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in three sets on Tuesday.
The Russian ranked, no. 138th in the world, took the first set and then built a 3-1 lead in the second following an early break. But the world no. 98 bounced back witha double break that allowed him to draw level and force the decider.
It was a nerve wracking final set with neither player getting broken. However Kotov dominated the tiebreak to complete a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) victory in two hours and 50 minutes.
Kotov had earlier rallied from a set down to beat Roman Safiullin in the first qualifying round and then he was leading Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 2-0 in teh second qualifying round wen the latter retired, only to find a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.
The 24-year-old Kotov is 1-1 for the season on the tour. Overall he is 6-5, which includes qualifying and Chalenger matches.
