Garcia Has No Problems against Parrizas-Diaz

After enduring a troublesome time in successive tournaments, Garcia finally made it two wins in a row here in Monterrey to reach the quarterfinal. And she did that winning both those encounters in straight sets.

Having gotten past Kaja Juvan in the first round, Garcia did not spend a lot of time in defeating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the second either. She was on court for a mere 63 minutes as she defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2.

Slamming eight aces in the match, Garcia did not have a lot of trouble with her serve but did get broken once in the match. That came in the first set as she served to go 4-1 up. From that point on, however, the Frenchwoman broke back her opponent three more times to march into the last eight.

These two wins follow three defeats from her previous four encounters. Now will be a good time to make it three in three in the lead-up to the Indian Wells Open next week.

Sherif Shocks Xinyu

For the second match in a row, Sherif was a rank outsider going up against her opponent and yet, found a way to get past her. Only this time, she did it from being a set and two match-points down.

Sherif came through 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 against Xinyu Wang in two hours and 38 minutes to make a rare entry into the quarterfinal of the tournament.

A late break in the first set saw Sherif concede the set and she then fell behind on her serve on two separate occasions in the second set. Both times, Sherif put up a brave fight to level things out only to find herself two match-points down in the tie-breaker that followed.

The world number 53 turned that around by winning four points in a row and pushing the match into a decider.

In the final set though, Wang’s steam ran out as Sherif broke her once, missed on three match-points of her own before converting the fourth to enter the quarterfinal.

Garcia v Sherif Prediction and Tip

Garcia will be a tough nut to crack despite Sherif’s successive shocks and we can expect her to come through in straight sets.
