Stephens v Voegele Head to Head

The two players have met each other a total of five times on the WTA Tour. Quite surprisingly, Voegele has won four of those matches and presently leads Stephens by 4-1. In fact, the Swiss has won their last three meetings.

However, most of those matches took place at a time when Stephens was only building her form. Their last encounter came in the Mexican Open last year, where Voegele held her own and defeated her American adversary in three sets.

Stephens Looking for Big Wins

Sloane Stephens is currently the World No. 4, courtesy of her sensational run in the previous season. This time, however, she is yet to display that kind of grit on the tour.

In the four-odd tournaments that Stephens has played in so far, she hasn’t moved past the initial rounds. The 2018 French Open runner-up lost in the first round in Brisbane to Johanna Konta and second round in Sydney to Yulia Putintseva.

In the Australian Open, she did have a good run and reached the fourth round but ended up losing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Her last event was the Mexican Open where she lost to the Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.

While Stephens may not be in that good of a form right now, she is more than capable of winning big here. Last year, along with the French Open, she reached the final at the Canadian Open and WTA Finals too.

Voegele Starts Well

Stefanie Voegele, who qualified for the main draw following a tricky draw in the qualifiers, has started her campaign in Indian Wells with a straight-set win over Sachia Vickery.

This is only the second time this season that the Swiss has made it to the second round. Last time she achieved this feat was in Dubai a couple of weeks back when she lost in the qualifiers but got a ticket into the main draw as a lucky loser. There, she was eventually knocked out by Belinda Bencic after winning her opening game.

Voegele is one of those players who hasn’t had that great of a run on the WTA circuit. Most of the time, she has been defeated in the early rounds, with a few exceptions here and there. For instance, in Lugano last season, she was a semifinalist.

Sloane Stephens v Stefanie Voegele Tips & Predictions

There is no doubt in the fact that Stephens will start here as the favourite to win. However, given her track record with Voegele, she may be a tad bit intimidated by the Swiss. It will be interesting to see if she manages to break that jinx here.

Tip: Match to have three sets: 7/4 (betway)
