Denis Shapovalov v Steve Johnson Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two men.

Shapovalov – needs to start fulfilling his talent

Although one of the most talented players on tour Shapovalov has endured a difficult 2019 to date, and keeps losing matches to players he should beat.

The pattern was set in his first tournament of the year when he lost to Portugal’s Joao Sousa in Auckland, and, after losing to Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, he was beaten by Pierre-Huhues Herbert in Montpellier and Mikhail Kukushkin in Marseille.

Johnson is another such opponent, and he needs to be wary of the American on Sunday, especially if he wants to create a niche for himself as one of the Next Gen players to actually watch out for. Age is on the side of the 19-year-old player.

Johnson – Local Player and Home Favourite

For 29-year old Johnson, Indian Wells is very much a home tournament. He was born in Redondo Beach in California and now lives in Organge Country, which means he can count on a lot of local support on Sunday.

He has won 4 senior titles on the senior ATP Tour, but, surprisingly for somebody who was brought up on hard courts, his successes have come on clay and grass.

His form coming into the tournament has been mixed, with his best result o the year coming at the Delray Beach Open when he reached the quarter-final only to lose to the eventual winner, Radu Albot of Moldova. However, he did manage to get past wild card Taylor Fritz with ease in the first round here on Saturday.
