Daniil Medvedev v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head
The two have met just once before this at the highest level and that match came late last year at the Toronto Masters and such was the situation for Daniil Medvedev, he had to qualify for the main draw of the competition with wins over Norbert Gombos and McDonald. He was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over the American.
Medvedev’s Run to the Top
The current ranking of 15th in the world is Medvedev’s career-best ranking and it comes as no surprise. Only a few months earlier, towards the end of the season, the Ukrainian was trying his best to qualify for the main draw of the Canadian Masters and here he is, seeded 14th in the world.
The turnaround for Medvedev came at the Winston-Salem Open, which saw him win his third title at the highest level and he sealed himself as one of the players to watch out when he triumphed at the Tokyo Open. That title win also included wins over Diego Schwartzman, Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Kei Nishikori – a tournament to remember for the 23-year-old.
This year, Medvedev made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open before taking a set off Novak Djokovic, was a semi-finalist at the Rotterdam Open and between those two fine performances, he also had time to win the Sofia Open title.
An exciting tournament lies ahead of Medvedev, who has never made it past the third round at a Masters tournament. This could be his season.

The 23-year-old American has been playing at the Challengers and ATP 250s so far, and enters this match with a 14-7 win-loss record under his belt this season. This includes a runner-up trophy from the Dallas Challenger and a quarter-final at Acapulco but he is now going to face an opponent who has immense confidence by his side.
On the other hand, McDonald has some form going his way, as his win over Joao Sousa showed, but will that be enough for him to challenge his 15th-ranked opponent? Looks very doubtful.
