The two men have met once before on the ATP Senior tour, with Khachanov winning on the grass in Halle in 2017 in three tight sets. Looking further back when they were playing on the junior tours, their head to head record was one win apiece.
Khachnov Desperate for Success, Fourth Round Berth
Coming into the tournament in desperate need of some good results to build confidence and form after a string of disappointing recent performances, Khachanov will now believe he has a good chance to reach the round of sixteen and perhaps further.
He was made to work for his second round victory over Feliciano Lopez of Spain, dropping the second set to him on Monday, but came through in the end. That should give him some confidence of beating Rublev to book his place in the fourth round.
This is after he had entered the tournament with a win-loss record of 6-6, having lost in the first round at the Doha Open, Sofia Open, Rotterdam Open and Dubai Open earlier this year.
Rublev Recovering from Back Injury Problems
Little more than a year ago, Rublev was ranked just outside the world’s top 30, but then plummeted down the rankings with a back injury which forced him to miss much of the middle part of the season.
He has been steadily rebuilding his career, and, to get in some much needed match practice, he entered the qualifying competition here where he got to the final, only to lose to Britain’s Kyle Edmund on Sunday.
That gave him a feel for the desert conditions and speed of the court in Indian Wells, which he put to good use in his second round match, seeing off Dutch veteran Robin Haase in three sets on Sunday. Now he faces a familiar foe in Khachanov on Tuesday.
