Rafael Nadal v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

These two were supposed to meet once before at the 2017 Rolex Paris Masters but Nadal withdrew from that quarter-final match because of injury. Krajinovic went on to beat John Isner in three tough sets to make it to the final – his only one at a Masters tournament – before he lost to Jack Sock. Interestingly, he had gone into that tournament as a qualifier, much like what he’s done here.

Effectively Going through the Rounds, Rafael

There was a first round bye for Nadal after which he has played two matches and dropped a sum total of five games across those couple of rounds to make it to round four. A win over Jared Donaldson in the second round was on expected lines but his taming of Diego Schwartzman was a sight to behold, much like he had done throughout the 2019 Australian Open before he ran into Novak Djokovic in the final.

The good news for Nadal is that Djokovic has already been knocked out of the competition, which means the other side of the draw is almost beatable bar his own fitness concerns. The real problem that Nadal could encounter is in the semi-finals where he potentially takes on Roger Federer.

But first things first and Krajinovic will be no pushover given the way he plays on a given day. Just that Nadal has too ammo up his sleeve to not be bothered by the Serbian.

One of the Seven Unseeded Players, Krajinovic

It’s been a tournament filled with surprises and yesterday saw a plethora of them, making it possible for seven seeded players to make it through to the fourth round. Krajinovic’s upset of Daniil Medvedev might not have made the top rank in that upsets chart – there was that Djokovic defeat too after all – but the way he dismantled his Russian opponent was a sight to behold.

Medvedev had gone into the match as a favourite to win in straight sets and in the end, he managed to win just five games across those two sets. Before that, Krajinovic had sent David Goffin packing too, and having reached the third round at the Australian Open, the Serb has shown enough pedigree to hurt higher-ranked opponents.

Can he be consistent enough to get the better of a player of Nadal’s class is the question. Incidentally, other than that final at the Paris Masters mentioned above, Krajinovic has never made it past fourth round at any other Masters or Grand Slam.
