Matteo Berrettini v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head
The two have never met before – this will be the first encounter between two men separated by just two places in the world rankings.
A Challenger Win to Boost Berrettini’s Confidence
World number 52 Berrettini has built a reputation as a clay court player, and his one senior ATP singles and doubles tour win came on that surface, in Switzerland last year. However, at 6 ft. 5 inches he has the physique for hard courts, and has managed one semi-final so far this year, in Sofia.
Since then though, he has been on a disappointing run on the senior tour, with early losses in Marseille, Dubai, and Indian Wells, where Sam Querry beat him in the first round.
To gain match fitness and form he entered the ATP Challenger event in Phoenix, which he went on to win, beating Mikhail Kukushkin in Monday’s final. This will give him confidence coming into today’s match.
Can Hurkacz Push on from His Indian Wells’ Success?
Hurkacz has had a very impressive start to the year, which has seen him graduate from winning the Challenger event in Canberra to knocking out Kei Nishikori in Dubai as a wildcard. He then followed that up with a run to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells, knocking out Nishikori again, and then Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, before succumbing to Roger Federer.
Another good week in Miami will see him climb into the world’s top 50 for the first time, and confirm his growing progression up the sport.
Berrettini v Hurkacz Predictions & Tips
This match is very hard to call, at least as far as the bookmakers are concerned: Berrettini will start the very slight favourite at 10/11, whilst you can get even money on Hurkacz (bet365) . The Italian is slightly favoured because of his higher world ranking, but the Pole has already shown this year that he is no respecter of reputations, and may be in the sort of form that will see him prevail.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (betway)
