Karen Khachanov v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
The two have met once before on the clay of Lyon two years ago, with Khachanov winning on that occasion in straight sets. It would be interesting to see how they go on a faster hard-court surface.
Khachanov to Build on Indian Wells Showing?
Khachanov is looking to rediscover the form that helped him win three senior ATP titles in 2018. To that end, he will have been buoyed by his performances in Indian Wells, where he reached the quarter finals, beating John Isner – the defending champion here in Miami – along the way.
He was defeated then by a familiar foe in the shape of Rafael Nadal, but, with the Spaniard forced to miss this tournament because of injury, that is one less man the Russian has to worry about in Florida.
The big question then is how will Khachanov go in this tournament after that good run last week given how tough things become for players featuring in the Sunshine Masters. After all, the Russian had entered the Indian Wells Masters on the back of three ATP defeats in a row, first round exits from Sofia, Rotterdam and Dubai respectively.
Thompson Encouraged by Norrie Win
Despite a somewhat patchy record in 2019, which has seen reach the quarter-finals in both New York and Sydney, whilst being interspersed with early losses in most of his other tournaments, Thompson is a solid performer on his day.
His problem is that he struggles to beat players in the top 30, which will give Khachanov an edge going into their match.
However, he did reach the second round in Indian Wells, and has now repeated that feat here in Florida, after coming from a set down to beat Britain’s Cameron Norrie on Thursday. Thompson’s confidence would be high but would it be high enough to take on the might of his opponent.

Khachanov will start odds-on favourite for the match at 3/13, whilst you can get 4/1 on Thompson. This is the sort of match that Khachanov, if he has ambitions of wanting to go far in this tournament, should be winning with comparative ease. For his part, Thompson needs to start winning some matches against the top players and we think he might stretch Khachanov here.
