A Chance for Halep to Reach the Top
The last couple of days in Miami have been fairly interesting. Following the defeat of Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams’ withdrawal from the competition, Halep’s path to the trophy has definitely become simpler.
She started her run with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Taylor Townsend. Halep previously played in the Indian Wells where she lost in the fourth round to Marketa Vondrousova – a defeat that came as a surprise to many.
Since then, quite a bit has changed – most notably, the Romanian’s decision to appoint a new coach. So far, they have started with a positive win but only time will tell how their partnership will fair on the tour. The reigning French Open champion hasn’t had the best of the seasons so far but her runner-up feat in Doha did help her stay in the top five.
Hercog Delivers her Best Performance
The 28-year-old Hercog has delivered the best performance of the season in Miami and to a certain extent, luck has had a part to play.
She started as a qualifier but lost early there. However, by the virtue of a lucky loser, she got a direct ticket into the second round and made the most of that opportunity. Hercog made most of that opportunity and edged past Misaki Doi in straight sets.
Up until now, the Slovenian had barely made it past the early rounds on the WTA Tour this year. Her best run of the season came in an ITF event in France, where she was the semifinalist.
Simona Halep v Polona Hercog Predictions & Tips
Halep will start this game as the favourite to win. However, considering her recent losses, it may not be an easy win for her. While Hercog isn’t among the most clinical players, Halep’s recent defeat to Vondrousova will certainly make things interesting here.
