Kevin Anderson v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have met once before, with Sousa winning on the clay of Nice in 2016. However, they have never met on Anderson’s favoured hard courts before.

Questions Still over the Anderson Elbow

Anderson was forced to miss Indian Wells with an elbow injury, and there are still questions as to whether he is fully recovered after his second round match with Spain’s Jaume Munar.

Although he eventually saw off his opponent in three sets, the South Africans had a tendency to snatch at some of his shots rather than enter into long rallies, almost as if he did not want to put too much strain on the elbow.

Sousa should not put up too stiff a challenge, but there are opponents to come who will find him out if he is carrying an injury. As mentioned in the earlier Anderson preview, an exhibition at Abu Dhabi aside, this is only Anderson’s third tournament of the year, having won the title at Pune, getting knocked out in the second round at the Australian Open and having withdrawn from the Indian Wells Masters.

Sousa, a Surprise Appearance in Third Round

For the world number 41 Sousa, there has been precious little suggestions in his 2019 form to date to suggest that he would make the third round of a Masters Event. In fact, in none of his other tournaments this year has he won more than a single match, so to find him still in the competition here will be a welcome surprise for him.

The draw so far has been relatively kind, pitting him against Tseng Chun-hsin in the first round, and the number thirty-one seed, Steve Johnson in the second, but he beat both in straight sets, so seemed to have found some form from somewhere.

The big question now is whether the near-30-year-old can pull off an upset against a vulnerable top-10 player.

Anderson v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Anderson will start odds-on favourite for the match at 11/18, whilst Sousa is priced at 17/10. Normally this is the sort of match that Anderson should win with ease, and, in reality, he will probably do so. The only thing that might thwart him is if his elbow problems prevent him playing to his full capacity.

Tip: Anderson to win: 8/15 (betway)
