Kevin Anderson v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
There has only been one previous outing between these two players, and that had happened in the 2016 Chengdu Open. Anderson had faced no challenge in that opening round match and won in straight sets, but lost in the quarter-final of that event.
Anderson Recovering Well from Injury?
There have been fitness concerns in recent times for the South African but he has shown some determination in this competition so far. After the Pune Open triumph and a second round exit at the Australian Open, he had withdrawn from a string of competitions including the Indian Wells Masters two weeks ago.
There were doubts about his fitness even in his opening win over Jaume Munar, which took him three sets but there were signs of recovery in his third round match. He defeated Joao Sousa 6-4, 7-6 to make it through to this fourth round where a win over the Aussie will ensure he equals his showing at the Miami Masters last year, thereby not dropping any points from his ranking.
Best Ever Showing for Thompson by a Distance
Thompson played in his first ever Grand Slam competition in 2013, having been knocked out in the final round of qualifying that season. Since then, he is in his seventh year of playing Slams and Masters, the best that he has done in either of the competitions going into this Miami Masters was a second round appearance apiece at the 2016 French Open and 2017, 2019 Australian Open and 2017 US Open.
Apart from that, there had been 11 first round exits from Grand Slam tournaments and three from the Masters till he got to the Indian Wells Open earlier this month. There he won his first ever match at a Masters tournament by defeated Federico Delbonis, before going down to Dominic Thiem.
And now, after all that underwhelming record, Thompson has managed to make it to the fourth round of the Miami Masters with wins over three opponents who all would have considered themselves heavy favourites to win it – Cameron Norrie, Karen Khachanov and Grigor Dimitrov.
Can he stun Anderson too?
