Roger Federer v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
This is the first time that Federer and Shapovalov are meeting each other on the tour.
Shapovalov Coming in Strong
This is the third time that Shapovalov has reached the semifinal of an ATP Masters tournament. The first time he achieved this feat was in the 2017 Rogers Cup – a breakthrough tournament for the youngster where he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro and Rafael Nadal.
Then, he repeated the same feat in last year’s Madrid Masters too and that time, he registered a win over Milos Raonic.
The youngster’s path to the semifinal has had its share of challenges but he overcame them handsomely. In the opening match, he defeated Daniel Evans following which, he moved past Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. In the quarterfinal, he met Frances Tiafoe and defeated him in three sets.
He had a good run in Indian Wells too, having reached the fourth round after knocking out Marin Cilic in straight sets. In addition to that, he also had a couple of quarterfinal appearances in Rotterdam and Montpellier.
Yet Another Semifinal for Federer
This is the third time in a row that Federer has reached the semifinal on the ATP Tour this season. He got the ball rolling in Dubai, where he won his 100th singles title. Then, reached the semifinal in Indian Wells a couple of weeks back but ended up losing to Dominic Thiem in the final.
He continued to play in the same vein in Miami too, with his most recent victim being Kevin Anderson. Federer defeated the South African 6-0, 6-4 in just an hour and 25 minutes. He kept his first-service win rate at 80% while winning five break points out of a possible 13.
The Swiss has a good track record in Miami and it certainly comes as no surprise to see him ace the tournament once again.
Federer v Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
Federer is significantly more experienced than his Canadian counterpart. To put things in perspective, the first time Federer reached a final on the tour was in the 2000 Marseille Open – just one year after Shapovalov was born.
Even though the number 20 seed has been evolving with time, it is hard to imagine him knocking out Federer.
Tip: Federer to win 2-0: 4/7 (Bet365)
