Grigor Dimitrov v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first competitive match between the 27-year old Bulgarian and the Australian, three years his junior.

Dimitrov Trying to Rediscover his Form

Dimitrov has had a poor 18 months. Ranked as high as number three in the world as recently as November 2017, he has struggled to match that level of performance since, and he has steadily tumbled down the rankings.

This year has been no different, with a fourth round defeat by Frances Tiafoe in Melbourne perhaps his best showing to date. However, after missing Indian Wells, he got back to winning ways by beating Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets in his second round match.

The thing to note here is that fitness has played its part this season as Dimitrov has featured in only three tournaments including this one in Miami. At Brisbane he was a losing quarter-finalist and then went out in the fourth round at the Australian Open.

Like many of the men still left in the draw here, he will know how many seeds have already gone out, which means he has a chance to go deep into the tournament here, gaining some much needed confidence into the bargain.

Thompson Gaining in Belief after Khachanov Win

Thompson has been known as a solid performer on the ATP tour for some time but, what was missing from his CV, were big victories against players in the world’s top thirty.

After coming from a set down against Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the first round, he had a chance to put that right in his second-round match with Russia’s Karen Khachanov, and duly did, beating the number ten seed 6-2, 6-3.

He will know that Dimitrov is not in good form, so will rate his own chances to taking another major scalp highly. The 24-year-old, with a 10-7 win-loss record this season, will have a good opportunity to notch up a top win again.

Dimitrov v Thompson Predictions & Tips

Dimitrov is the odds-on favourite at 2/5 whilst Thompson is priced at 12/5. Whilst these odds may reflect comparative world rankings and experience, there has been little in Dimitrov’s recent form to suggest he should start as such as shortly priced favourite. Many seeds have already departed from this tournament already, and there is a good chance the Bulgarian could follow them.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (William Hill)
