Johanna Konta v Wang Yafan Head to Head

The two women have never played each other before.

Konta Hoping to Duplicate Fed Cup Form

Konta has struggled for consistency and form since she reached her career high ranking of number four in 2017. Since then she has struggled to achieve any sort of sustained performance on court, and has changed coaches almost as often as she has changed rackets.

This year has been no different, with her best result coming in Acapulco where she reached the quarter-final, whilst she did get as far as the third round in Indian Wells before losing to Kiki Bertens.

Instead she has saved her best tennis for the Federation Cup, where she has been a leading member of the Great Britain team that has won promotion to the World Group elite for the first time in 1993, after defeating Kazakhstan in London. That should give her confidence for this Morocco Open opener.

Wang, Enjoying Her Most Successful Year

Wang has had her most successful year to date on tour, at least in terms of results, having won her maiden WTA singles tour title in Acapulco, beating American Sofia Kenin in the final.

That saw her enter the world’s top 50 for the first time, and she followed that up in Miami where she achieved her first ever win against a player in the top-ten, beating Elina Svitolina in straight sets,

She has also achieved 3 WTA doubles titles but, like her win in Mexico, they were all achieved on hard courts. She has little form on clay – none of her finals on the junior tours came on that surface – so the match against Konta will be something of a venture into unfamiliar territory.

Konta v Wang Predictions & Tips

Konta will start the odds-on favourite at 1/2, whilst Wang is priced at 9/5. Konta is not in good form and has struggled for consistency, but is playing an opponent who is far from home on clay courts. That should be enough for Konta to win and gain some much needed confidence into the bargain.

Tip: Konta to win in straight sets: 4/5 (888Sport)
