What Happened at the 2019 WTA Bogota?
Amanda Anismova would go on to make a name for herself in the season and it was her title win at the Bogota Open that kick-started something special for her. She was a three-set winner against Astra Sharma of Australia in the final, beating her from being a set down.
Some of the other seeded players did not have a great time at the tournament though, with only the 11th seeded Lara Arruabarrena making it to the semifinal. Top seeded Jelena Ostapenko continued her downward slope with a first round exit, while Anna Karolina Schmiedlova went out in the second round after having won the title the previous year.
The 2018 edition of WTA Copa Colsanitas Bogota was an intriguing affair, to say the least. The tournament started with several lowly-ranked players being awarded the top seeds. Seeded first was the World No. 73 Tatjana Maria and placed in the opposite half was the second seed, Magda Linette.
The rest of the bracket was filled by the likes of Johanna Larsson, Veronica Cepede Royg, Alison Riske, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Ana Bogdan.
Four of the top eight seeds failed to make it past the early rounds, with the final four featuring the unseeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Dalila Jakupovic, along with the seventh seed Bogdan and the fifth-seeded Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena.
In the end, the final showdown was set between Schmiedlova and the Spaniard, which was ultimately won by the former with 6-2, 6-4. It is also interesting to note that that match was the second consecutive time that Arruabarrena lost in the final in Bogota.
That was Slovakian’s first and only title of the season and third title overall. She is currently ranked as the World No. 78.
