Through the years, WTA Budapest has served as a training ground for young and emerging players who are looking to establish themselves on the tour.

Since its inception, the tournament has attracted the attention of many top players like Sara Errani, Simona Halep, Roberta Vinci, Patty Schnyder, Dominika Cibulkova, and others.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Budapest Grand Prix?

Bernard Pera won her first ever title at the WTA level when she overcame Aleksandra Krunic in the final of the 2022 Budapest Grand Prix. Pera routed her opponent 6-3, 6-3 to lift the title.

In a solid show of form, Pera did not drop a single set in the entire tournament, and became stronger and more clinical as the competition progressed.

This was after the top seeded Barbora Krejcikova lost in the very first round, second seed Martina Trevisan was sent packing in the quarterfinals while the third seeded and defending champion Yulia Putintseva was a third round loser.

Yulia Putintseva lifted the WTA Budapest title in 2021, having defeated surprise finalist Anhelina Kalinina in the title-decider. She won 6-4, 6-0.

Earlier, Putintseva, who was the top seed in the tournament, had had a tough time overcoming Dalma Galfi while Kalinina stunned Danielle Collins, who had to retire from the match down 4-1 in the second set after losing the first.

The WTA Hungarian Ladies Open wasn’t held in 2020.

Alison van Uytvanck successfully won the title yet again after having clinched it the previous year too. Van Uytvanck defeated Marketa Vondrousova in the final, beating her in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to win the tournament.

Earlier she was taken to a third set tie-breaker by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinal while Vondrousova crushed Anastasia Potapova to reach the final.

Second seeded Kirsten Flipkens withdrew from the tournament because of an injury while third seeded Pauline Parmentier was knocked out in the quarterfinals. Aleksandra Krunic, Andrea Petkovic and Johanna Larsson were the other seeded players who failed to make it to the quarterfinals.

The 2018 edition of the competition was won by the unseeded Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, who defeated the top seed and the Slovakian veteran Dominika Cibulkova in the final. It was an impressive performance by the Belgian, who won her second singles title on the tour, with the first one coming in Quebec in 2017.

Uytvanck, on her path to the final, delivered many upsets. She started with the fifth seed Buzarnescu whom she routed 6-1, 6-0. After that, she met the second seed Shuai Zhang in the semifinal where she delivered a similar result. In the semifinal, she was pitted against the lucky loser Viktoria Kuzmova who was enjoying a decent run in the competition until that point.

The early rounds saw the exit of many seeded players. This gave an opportunity to the likes of Johanna Larsson, Mona Barthel, Petra Martic, and Kuzmova to rise to the occasion and make an impression.
