What Happened at the 2022 Istanbul Cup?

Russians Anastasia Potapova and Veronika Kudermetova made it to the 2022 final with the former defeating the latter 6-3, 6-1 to lift the trophy.

Potapova, who was  a qualifier coming into the tournament, faced the seventh seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarterfinals and sent her on her way in straight sets. This was followed by a comeback from behind win against Yulia Putintseva in the semis.

Top seeded Elise Mertens fell in the first round to Rebecca Peterson while the second seeded Sorana Cirstea made it as far as the semifinal where she fell to Kudermetova.

The 2021 edition of the Istanbul Cup was won by Sorana Cirstea who defeated Elise Mertens in the final. She won 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Cirstea, who hadn’t won a WTA title since 2008, did not drop any set in the entire tournament, while facing just the one seeded player in the competition – in the final, Mertens.

Second seeded Petra Martic fell in the first round itself to Fiona Ferro.

Unseeded Patricia Maria Tig won the 2020 Istanbul Cup title with a hard-fought, three-set win over Canadian qualifier Eugenie Bouchard. She took the match 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

None of the seeded players made it to the semifinal of the competition and only two, Rebecca Peterson and Polona Hercog even entered the last eight stage.

In 2019, Petra Martic went on to win the Istanbul Cup title by beating the French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova in the final. She won 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. The tournament saw many early upsets, with all but one of the seeded players losing by the second round.

Vondrousova defeated Barbora Strycova and Martic benefitted from Margarita Gasparyan’s injury in the two semifinals.

The 2018 edition saw a star-studded one with Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova taking the top two seeds. The remaining seeds were taken by the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Zhang Shuai, Ekaterina Makarova, Sorana Cirstea, Aryna Sabalenka, and Irina-Camelia Begu.

The early rounds saw many upsets with Sabalenka, Radwanska, Makarova, and Shuai losing in a rather unexpected affair. On the back of these defeats, Maria Sakkari, Polona Hercog, Donna Vekic, and other similar players rose to the occasion.

Kuznetsova and Wozniacki were eventually knocked out by Parmentier and Hercog respectively. Driven by confidence and a great surge in momentum, the underdogs eventually paved their way into the semifinals and later, clashed in the final. Parmentier won that match in three sets to lift the third singles title of her career.
