The defending champion is the Ukranian No. 1 and a top 10 player Elina Svitolina. The 23-year-old has already made quite a name for herself on the tour, after having a splendid season in 2017.

She had already displayed her potential to be a top player in the previous seasons, but it was in 2017 that she really hit her stride. The Istanbul Cup was one of the many tournaments in the course of her season, where she proved that she is a force to be reckoned with.

She entered the main draw as the top-seeded player. In the first round, she faced the Russian qualifier Viktoria Kamenskaya and prevailed in three sets. That was the only time in the tournament that Svitolina dropped a set.

Thereafter, she proceeded to win every bout in straight sets, including her final match against the Belgian Elise Mertens.
