What Happened at the 2022 WTA Wuhan?
The Wuhan Open was not held in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic while the 2022 edition of the competition was cancelled after worries around the safety of Chinese player Peng Shuai surfaced.
Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her title she had won in 2018 by defeating Alison Riske in a surprise 2019 final.
Why surprise? Because Sabalenka was the ninth seed behind the likes of Ash Barty, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova and none of them made it to the final.
On the other hand, Riske was an unseeded player who got past Qiang Wang, Svitolina and Kvitova en route her path to the final.
Sabalenka had won the 2018 Wuhan Open by beating Anett Kontaveit in that title-decider. She was unseeded in that tournament, and overcome Svitolina and Ash Barty in the matches before that.
