The rivalry between the Williams sisters has entertained the fans for a good couple of decades now. From their very first encounter in 1998 to their most recent meeting in 2018, the two players have always managed to put up a remarkable performance.

With the 2019 WTA Tour right around the corner, the two players facing off yet again makes it for a good start to the season.

Serena Williams v Venus Williams Head to Head

Serena and Venus have faced each other a total of 30 times so far. Serena holds an 18-12 lead over her sister. Furthermore, she has won seven of their last 10 meetings on the tour.

In 2018, the two sisters met twice on the WTA Tour – the Indian Wells and the US Open. In the first case, it was Venus who won the match in straight sets while in the second, Serena sailed to a comfortable victory with 6-1, 6-2.

Serena’s Return to the WTA Tour in 2018

After missing most of the 2017 season owing to her pregnancy, Serena returned to tennis in 2018. However, the start of her season didn’t go according to the plan. She lost in the early rounds at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. With back to back exits, it was quite evident that she wasn’t 100% ready.

It wasn’t until the French Open that she started to display streaks of her former self. After a fourth-round loss there, she moved on to reach the final at the Wimbledon, losing to Angelique Kerber.

She repeated a similar feat at the US Open as well, where she lost to Naomi Osaka in a controversial final. Thereafter, Serena took the remainder of the season off to prepare for the next year.

The American has expressed a great deal of confidence and excitement for the upcoming season. After spending 2018 acclimatizing to life on the court, she appears to be ready for what lies ahead. In an interview with the National, she was quoted saying that she has ‘crazy big goals.’

Venus’ Uneventful Season

Venus started the year as the World No. 5 but over the course of the season, she fell out of the top 30.

This was largely driven by her inconsistent form. For instance, she lost in the early rounds at WTA Sydney and the Australian Open. After that, she reached the semifinal at the Indian Wells and the quarterfinal at the Miami Masters.

Those were her best tournaments of the year, considering that she couldn’t repeat those feats again in any of the subsequent events. By the end of the grass season, she was out of the top 10.

In the US Open Series as well, the best she could do is reach the third round at the Rogers Cup and the US Open, where she lost respectively to Simona Halep and Serena.

Serena vs. Venus – Who will win?

Serena has a psychological edge over Venus, given her insurmountable lead in the head to head tally. She has also had a comparatively better year and is certainly in a superior form. At the same time, Venus has delivered shocking upsets over the years and it wouldn’t be surprising to see her do the same here as well.

Serena will start this game as the favorite to win.
