Roger Federer has opted out of the Rogers Cup that will be played in Canada in the lead up to the 2018 US Open in August.
The Swiss maestro, who is ranked second in the ATP Rankings at the moment, is a two-time winner at the Rogers Cup but he decided yesterday he would prefer being fresh for the US Open. As a result, he will give the Rogers Cup a miss, giving himself very little preparation time for the final Grand Slam of the year.
The US Open will begin from August 27 and go on till September 9 when the men’s singles final will be played while the Rogers Cup begins on August 6. Alexander Zverev is the defending champion at this competition, having beaten Federer in the final last year.

Federer will be replaced by Jeremy Chardy in the main draw of the Rogers Cup.
In a media statement, Federer exclaimed disappointment at having missed out of the competition. He added, “I had a fantastic time in Montreal last year and always enjoy playing in front of the Canadian fans.”
“Unfortunately with scheduling being the key to my longevity moving forward, I have regrettably decided to withdraw from Toronto this year. I am sorry to miss it.”
The Swiss Australian Open champion is the only one of the top 20 players in the world who will miss out of this competition, with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal being the others who will be involved in the tournament.
What this means is that Federer will only feature at the Cincinnati Open going into the 2018 US Open. He has featured in seven competitions this year, including the Wimbledon, and won three of them.
Federer will hope he can add to the five US Open titles he has won, the last of which came in 2008. He managed a finals place in the 2009 edition where he lost to Juan Martin del Potro and since then he has not entered the final again.
