Belinda Bencic v Petra Martic Head to Head

The two women have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the Swiss world number 21, and the Croat ranked 32 places below her.

Bencic Enjoying a Fine Year

Bencic is having an excellent year so far, having started 2019 in style by winning the Hopman Cup for the second successive year with Roger Federer, and then reaching the semi-finals in Hobart.

She then claimed her third WTA title, and the first in more than three years in Dubai. There then followed a run to the semi-finals in Indian Wells, before she eventually lost to Angelique Kerber.

It has been relatively plain sailing for her in Charleston so far this week. She began by easing past Destanee Aiava of Australia, then comfortably beating Allie Klick of the USA, before beating her compatriot Taylor Townsend with a minimum of fuss. Martic though should present a sterner test.

Martic Looking for Form

World number 53 Martic is some way off the form that has seen her feature in two WTA finals, although she will take some heart from the fact that the most recent of those in Bucharest last year came on clay.

This year she will probably best be remembered for the images flashed around the world of her leaving the court in Melbourne in tears after throwing away chances to beat Sloane Stephens. Since then there have been first round exits in Dubai and Indian Wells, although she did reach the second round in Miami, only to lose to Karolina Pliskova.

However, she has done well in Charleston this week, beating local favourite Amanda Anisimova in three sets in the first round, then overcoming Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella, before a third round win against another American, Jessica Pegula.

Bencic v Martic Predictions & Tips

Bencic is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Martic is priced at 7/4 (bet365) . The Swiss player has had a fine year so far, and should progress to yet another semi-final at the expense of her Croat opponent.

Tip: Bencic to win in straight sets: 6/5 (Betfair)
